MY STORY

After college, I had the rare opportunity to pursue my career in California. While there I worked under an Interior Architect from Paris at the firm Jessica Hall & Associates. This is where my passion for design stemmed from as I gained valuable experience in all aspects of design and the interior design business. It was a small company but I managed to soak up all that I could from the lead designers and the principal, Jessica. I am grateful that I had such an opportunity and feel it was the perfect opener to my career in interior design.

I returned home to London, ON after the recession hit hard in the US. Soon however, I found myself working for a previous employer who had recently established her own design business, Surroundings by Mary Arthur. In college I worked for her at a paint and decorating store she owned with her husband.

As the company grew, we quickly found ourselves working for one of the top developers in London and were the designers on their large condo project, Nuvo Condos. While working on this, we also designed the new corporate office for Old Oak Properties and went on to work on their latest Luxury Apartment project, Pomeroy Place. After finding myself moving once again, I was excited and honored to find an interior design opportunity with Arcuo Interior Design Inc. I feel fortunate to be working in this creative field in Thunder Bay and hope to use my experience and creativity to transform our client’s homes and spaces.

DESIGN PROCESS

When I start working on a project I usually start by visualizing myself in the space. By doing this I get a good sense of how I would use the space (ie- the function), the flow and the proportions. I use the design elements and principles as the basis of every layout and tailor each one to the client’s needs and wants. Design ideas come from my past experience, current trends and classic elements that are tried and true.

CAREER CHOICE

I always had a creative side growing up, but thought of it more as a hobby. It wasn’t until I did a Co-op in an accounting office during high school that I realized I wanted something more. I couldn’t picture myself with an “office” job and craved something with a faster pace where I could be creative. I started in an Art & Design Fundamentals program that offered all aspects of creative design; Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fine Art and Art History. It’s here that I discovered my passion and interest in Interior Design. I went on to complete the 3 year Interior Design Diploma at Fanshawe College. While attending Fanshawe, I won second place in the London Home Builder’s Design Competition for my large home renovation project.

INSPIRATION

As cliché as it sounds inspiration can be found everywhere. I often find the most inspiration from magazines, blogs and architecture but it can be as small as a colour combination on someone’s scarf or as detailed as the pattern or shapes created on the ceiling from a light fixture. I also admire and am inspired by other designers. Some of my favourites include Kelly Hoppen, Sarah Richardson and Kelly Wearstler. Each are very different but have specific styles that I find intriguing and unique and their attention to detail is inspiring in itself.
